Who are The Macular Society?
Running from the 27th June to the 3rd of July, this year’s Macular Week organised by The Macular Society aims to raise awareness of an eye condition relating to the macula – an important but very small area for seeing at the back of the eye. This condition known as macular degeneration affects 600,000 people in the UK, many of whom rely on The Macular Society for support and advice through their large print, audio or online articles and newsletters, just email firstname.lastname@example.org or ring their telephone helpline (0300 3030 111). They also offer confidential telephone counselling sessions and nationwide support groups.
This week, we have headed up the motorway to the ICC, Birmingham for the The Royal College of Ophthalmologists Annual Congress 2014. Every year, we hire a stand and take Viteyes brochures, samples and pens to give out to the delegates as we tell them about Viteyes – our nutritional supplement for eye health.
We emphasise the strong research base behind Viteyes – as this is of high importance to prescribers such as ophthalmologists and GP’s. Evidence based prescribing ensures that patients receive the treatments that give the best results.
Gift of Sight is the charity set up to raise funds for the pioneering eye research at Southampton Eye Unit lead by Professor Andrew Lotery. He specialises in macular degeneration and his team are at the forefront of new technologies to help develop new treatments in the future. Other areas of research are glaucoma, inherited retinal diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa and childhood conditions such as nystagmus.
During December Winchester holds a Christmas market and the town centre looks truly magical . A fundraising carol concert organised by Gift of Sight in Winchester College Chapel is dimly lit and we sponsor the purchase of pen torches with our logo on for everyone to use to read the hymn sheets. This gives an insight into how debilitating macular degeneration can be to those of us with full vision. This year’s concert on the 16th December is sold out already.
Viteyes 2 is the only eye vitamin available in the UK to match the recommended doses in the updated National Eye Institute research exactly. This makes it the clear first choice for maintaining eye health.
We have been working closely alongside Vitamin Health USA, the parent company of Viteyes to ensure a seamless yet quality controlled transition.
The long anticipated Age Related Eye Disease part 2 (AREDS 2) results were announced at ARVO (Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology) in Seattle on May 5th. This complex study began in 2006 and included 4203 participants and 82 clinics through the United States. It was designed to find out the best combination of vitamins, minerals and carotenoids to delay the progression of Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), currently the leading cause of sight loss in the developed world.
